The Definitive Bacon Recipe

Posted September 1, 2012 by foodiesandfatties in Recipes

It goes without saying that I am a bacon believer.  I subscribe to the Holy Grail of Pork Belly.  Maybe it is because I did not eat a lot of bacon growing up but I literally could eat slice upon slice until the pigs came home.

Call me sentimental but I, Mr. Foodtastic, have decided to release my definitive recipe for my brown sugar bacon on International Bacon Day. IBD in the unofficial observance held on the Saturday before Labor Day in the United States.  Bacon Day celebrations typically  include social gatherings during which participants create and consume dishes containing bacon, including bacon-themed breakfasts, lunches, dinners, desserts, and drinks.

No longer will I get calls at 2am from friend’s asking me to soothe their bacon fix.  Here is my legacy, in recipe form.

BROWN SUGAR BACON

8 Slices of Thick Cut Bacon, I like Applewood

1 Tbsp. of Paprika

1/2 cup of Packed Brown Sugar

1 Tbsp. of Cumin

1 Tsp. of Coriander

1 Tsp. of Dry Mustard

1 Tbsp. of Dried Basil

1 Tbsp. of Red Pepper Flakes

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

Place all the spices and brown sugar in a small bowl. Use a spoon, fork or your hand to evenly toss all spices together.  You can also places all the spices in a spice grinder if you wish.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.  Lay each piece of bacon side by side.  Be sure to not overlap the bacon.

Sprinkle the spice blend on top of the bacon and rub on to the bacon evenly.

Place in oven and cook approximately 20 minutes or until done.  The bacon will look slightly browner than usual due to the spices.

bacon - done

Let stand for 5 minutes and remove bacon from pan before it cools completely.  If you let it cool completely on the pan it may be difficult to remove because of the harden sugars.

bacon - done 2

Close your eyes and savor every bite.  This is what heaven is like.  Bon Apetit!
